Activity: Fun with Streamers

Limbo Streamers: Tape one end of a streamer to the wall and the other end to an opposite wall. This works best in a hallway but kids think it is fun across large rooms as well. Place several streamers in different increments of height going from high to low. Then have the children stand in a line and do the limbo! Have more streamers on hand if any tear during play.

Laser Maze: This is a fun activity for older children as well. You will need to tape streamers from one wall to an opposite wall much like in the Limbo Streamer game. The difference is this time you will want to not only make them in different height levels but you will want to tape them horizontally going from a corner to the floor or a variation all over the room or hallway. A child will have to navigate the streamers without touching them from one end of the room to the other. The activity can be adjusted for small children by not making the maze difficult. However, a five year old is capable of a more complicated round of Laser Maze.

Balancing Act: Tape down streamers from one end of the room to the other on the floor. Make several lines of streamers. Have the child walk from one end to the other only walking on the streamer. You can tape two streamers side by side or even three to make it easier. You can also have different levels of balancing by having three side by side, then two then one, to make it interesting.

Measuring: Children love to explore how big something can be like a whale or Noah’s Ark. You will need a lot of streamers but this activity is so much fun. You can pick an animal or a structure and tell your child how big it is in feet. Calculate how much streamer is on one roll. For instance, if you only need one roll for the approximate length of a ship, animal or structure, then have your child take one end and run around the house or in one direction in a park or around the block until it reaches the end. Your child will be amazed how big, big can be!
