Back-to-School Blues

Will someone please tell me where I can purchase a Scooby-Doo backpack that’s not pink and doesn’t feature wheels?

I’ve spent the past two weeks driving to nearly a dozen stores and scouring the Internet for my daughter’s dream backpack.

The stores are a dead end and the online resources say they have the bag in stock, but when I click to order, all I get is an error message.

What the…

Heaven forbid the kid show up for the first day of second grade without an animated Great Dane on her back.

Adding to my back-to-school blues is the fact that soon I will be forced to fill a Mystery Mobile lunch box with appealing, yet healthy menu options that won’t be traded, dumped or otherwise left to rot while my kid makes merry on the monkey bars.

This year I’ve been trying to be a bit more proactive by following tips by experts (a.k.a. other moms) in order to make lunch packing a stress-free experience.

Actually, the packing doesn’t cause me stress; it’s discovering that the food has gone untouched that drives me bananas.

This year I’m unleashing a new plan which includes:

New bread choices: Instead of traditional wheat bread, I will be incorporating bagels, multigrain crackers, pita bread, and English muffins into my daughter’s lunch.

Super shapes: We already have dog, cat, sailboat, dinosaur, heart and star-shaped cookie cutters to spice up sandwiches, but this year I’ve added some new designs that should bring a smile to my daughter’s face.

Leftovers: My daughter loves turkey, grilled chicken and ham, so on nights we have leftovers I’ll pack them in her lunch box and forgo the traditional sandwich.

Pick your own: One mom suggested that I fill a bowl with fruit, another with desserts and one more with dairy snacks (such as yogurt or string cheese) and let my daughter select one item from each bowl on days she is tired of eating sandwiches for lunch.

Hopefully, my new plan will cure my back-to-school blues.

In the meantime, I have less than two weeks to find a blue or green Scooby backpack.

HELP!
