If you give a dog a donut… you might end up with a nasty stain on your carpet.
But in the wonderful world of children’s books, if you give a pooch a pastry with a hole in the middle, you get hours of reading fun.
If You Give a Dog a Donut is lucky 13 for the famed writing/illustrating team of Laura Numeroff and Felicia Bond. The duo is the mastermind behind the uber-popular and irresistibly delicious If You Give… series, which my 7-year-old daughter devours every chance she gets.
In fact, we own the entire collection of If You Give… tales… thanks to Oprah Winfrey.
In 2000, If You Give a Pig a Pancake landed on Oprah’s “Favorite Things” list. Like the lemming I am, I ran out and bought the colorful picture book along with its predecessor If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. That was three years before I got married and even considered having kids.
Fast-forward to 2011 and now I have a bookworm who called the title of Numeroff/Bond’s latest creation just minutes after she read If You Give a Cat a Cupcake.
“Mommy, there should be a book about a dog eating a donut,” my daughter excitedly suggested.
She also recommended: If You Give a Fish a French Fry.
We’ll see how that one pans out.
Call me, Laura Numeroff.
After seeing what happens when you give a moose a muffin, a mouse a cookie, a cat a cupcake, and a pig a party, we finally discover the ramifications of presenting a pup with a piece of fried dough.
“If you give a dog a donut, he will ask for some apple juice to go with it. When you give him the juice, he’ll drink it all up.”
But that’s just the beginning of the incredible adventure that unfolds in this delightful story with the most tantalizingly rich illustrations you could possibly sink your teeth into.
Once dog downs his apple juice he’s off to hunt down more fruit, which leads to a baseball game, which begets interest in dressing up like a pirate, flying a kite, flittering in a bird bath, dancing for treasure, and a bunch of other highly entertaining activities, which work up his appetite for… you guessed it… more donuts.
The precocious pup will have your young reader begging for more.
If You Give a Fish a French Fry–just sayin’.
If you are looking to give your child his first taste of interactive alliteration, spark his imagination, or you simply want a light bedtime read that will inspire delicious dreams, consider picking up If You Give a Dog a Donut. The scrumptious story can be found on HarperCollins’ website, as well as in book stores and discount retailers nationwide.
