What does it say about me that I automatically see every new Fancy Nancy story as the basis for another Nintendo DS product or an animated PBS series?
It’s all about synergy.
Fortunately, our home is a video-free zone, so the only helping of Fancy Nancy my young daughter gets is via good old-fashioned books; the kind that don’t require batteries, voice recordings or electronic page turners. With Jane O’Connor and Robin Preiss Glasser’s latest masterpiece, Fancy Nancy and the Fabulous Fashion Boutique, young readers get all that and then some.
In the latest brightly illustrated installment, Fancy Nancy is back with a multi-layered mission: Purchase a birthday present for her little sister and score a frilly fan for her fancy self. Since Nancy doesn’t have money for both she creates a Fabulous Fashion Boutique in the middle of her yard. Nancy cashes in by selling some of her old outfits and other accessories, but the plot thickens when our young entrepreneur gets saddled by a guilty conscience after selling the blinged out necklace her little sis had her eye on.
As in books past O’Connor doesn’t make life easy for her main character. In Fancy Nancy’s Fabulous Fashion Boutique the pint-sized fashionista is required to iron out a series of fiascos, including the aforementioned money woes, self-imposed guilt trips, a potential ruined relationship with pal Wanda, and even Mother Nature’s wrath.
To say the book is a real page turner would be a serious understatement. In fact, Nancy has so much on her plate in the latest title that one could easily overlook a huge surprise O’Connor dishes out to loyal Fancy Nancy readers: The announcement of Nancy’s little sister’s name.
I won’t spoil the special reveal, but I will say that SuperNanny fans will be quite pleased with little sis’s memorable moniker.
So will Nancy come up with the funds she needs to score her fancy fan? Will our heroine’s little sister remain true to her glamour-proof self while celebrating the day of her birth, and will Mother Nature’s attempt to wash out the festivities create a main character meltdown?
You’ll have to visit HarperCollins’ website to find out. Or you can head out to major book stores that carry Fancy Nancy’s Fabulous Fashion Boutique. Either way you won’t be disappointed.
The 32-page picture book is filled with signature details that help enhance the story and transport readers to the wonderful world of Fancy Nancy-land. In addition, Fancy Nancy’s Fabulous Fashion Boutique features just the right mix of challenging vocabulary words and colorful phrases that you would expect to find in an outstanding I Can Read! book.
