On Friday we hit the jackpot in free family food and entertainment, thanks to our community. Taking advantage of local activities can be a fun way to become involved with your neighbors, learn new things about where you live and have some fun frugally!
We happen to be pretty lucky to be able to live in the area that we do. Before living frugally, we might have passed up some of the free community activities that are available. But knowing how much fun they can be now, there is no going back. If you have any of these types of activities where you live, I hope you can check them out.
For our frugal night, we headed over to our local community park. The parks and recreation department arranged to have a professional sand artist create a magnificent sculpture. There was also another large pile of sand that was just for amateur sculptors to try. The artist spend some time showing everyone the basics of creating a very cool sand castle. There were buckets, shovels and sculpting tools available for the kids to use. A hose with a safety nozzles provided easy access to water.
Along with the sand fun, there were plenty of free snacks, including hot dogs with the fixings, popcorn, bottled water, bags of potato chips, and bushels of nectarines and peaches. The fruit was from a local produce stand and was fresh and sweet.
When dusk hit and the sun started to go down, a portable theater set up in the field and everyone settled down on the lawn to view a family friendly movie. My kids were one of the last ones to leave the sand pile. We grabbed some snacks and sat at a picnic bench to enjoy the first 30 minutes of the movie. We decided to go home early in order to make bedtime.
On Saturday, we returned to the park. The sand pile was still there, along with many of the sculpting tools.
