Frugal Protein Sources

Unfortunately, it is a fact right now that food prices are continuing to rise, and the experts are telling us that it is going to get worse before it gets better, if it ever does get better. Although most food is effected by the current food price hikes, the cost of protein sources is particularly worrisome. Meat prices had already been high, and now with the drought will get even higher. Peanut butter, a once inexpensive source of protein, has now gotten more expensive and may no longer be the best choice when you are on a limited budget.

This means that we must work a little harder and be a little smarter to ensure that our families get the protein that they need in their diets. Here are some suggestions to help you along.

Rice and Beans

Why not just beans as a protein source? Because when eaten in combination, the body is able to get more protein out of the beans. It is always good to eat them together or within a few hours of each other. Dry beans are an especially inexpensive and healthy food, and they don’t have the extra sodium that usually is included in canned beans.

Eggs

Eggs can be one of the most filling, high protein and inexpensive meals there is even with the increase in egg prices of about 15 percent. Eggs can be prepared in a number of different ways and served at any meal. If you are worried about cholesterol eat more egg whites than yolks.

Quinoa

Quinoa is a grain, but it is one that has a significant amount of protein as well as other nutrients.
Milk, Yogurt, and Cheese

Shop the dairy aisle for some great sources of protein, especially in the form of Greek yogurt. Prices here continue to go up as well, but they are still significantly lower than meat prices. Shop carefully and try not to be brand loyal in order to stock up on the best deals.
