Old Man Winter is alive and well in Wisconsin. After sleeping in for a few weeks, the season has reared its bitterly cold head and dumped nearly a half–foot of snow in less than 24 hours. Fortunately, there are ways to heat things up while keeping the kids entertained.
While you may be tempted to let your little ones warm up by the glow of the TV, you’ll find that you can a lot more fun if you get out of the house and experience the following winter boredom busters:
Park It: Head out to a local park to take advantage of sledding hills and snowshoeing trails. Or, look for a frozen pond that has been designated as a safe place to ice skate. There are a host of snow-related activities that often go overlooked at area green spaces, such as cross-country skiing. If you can’t make it to a park, then send the kids outside to your backyard where they can build snow forts, snowmen, snow angels or engage in a massive snowball fight.
Indoor Recreation: If Old Man Winter’s wind chills are so brutal that it is unsafe for kids to be outside for prolonged periods of time, then check out your city’s recreation centers, such as the YMCA, which offers a plethora of programs for kids when area playing fields are covered with snow and ice. In addition to traditional indoor activities such as basketball, swimming and volleyball, places like the Y also feature science workshops, ballet lessons, music classes and cooking demonstrations.
Paint-n-Pottery: When the weather outside is frightful, explore indoor offerings which allow your child to exercise his creativity. Most cities feature at least a few studios or shops that give customers the chance to paint their own pieces of pottery. In some cases kids can even design their own ceramic items on a pottery wheel. The hands-on learning opportunity is a great artistic outlet for kids, and at some shops, you can take advantage of group discounts, which means the entire family can have fun painting.
