Holiday Decorations Swap

Get rid of that tired stuff and get something in return! Host a party where you and extended family members and friends can trade for “new to you” items. Let people know ahead of time what you have in mind so they can gather up stuff they no longer need or want. Make it clear that “junk” isn’t allowed. If it’s torn, stained, or broken, they should toss it instead of bringing it along.

Make this event into a party. Set aside plenty of time for it so you can visit and enjoy each other’s company. You won’t likely have much time for lazy afternoon chit chat or an evening of giggles as the major holidays get closer. Ask everyone to bring a snack, beverage, or disposable tableware. Make a list so you don’t get duplicates.

Ask each guest to drop off items at least a few days in advance. Be sure to save boxes, bags, or containers, so your guests can easily carry away their new items. Just for fun, you might want to pick up a inexpensive decorations, such as a votive holder or cute candle plate, and hand these out as party gifts.

Set up an area and display the trade items the night of the party. Everyone will take turns “shopping” through the offerings, choosing one item or grouping during each turn. Decide in advance whether items that are left over should be returned to the owner or donated to charity. Agree in advance on which charity should be used if that is the plan.

You can still do this for Halloween if you plan quickly. You might also want to include costumes for swapping. On the other hand, you could just throw one party and swap decorations for all the rapidly approaching holidays, but I say why do that when this is the perfect excuse to have more than one get together?

These types of parties are also great for back to school exchanges or trading non-holiday home accessories.
