Many parents say that completing homework is a struggle at their house. Either the child does not want to complete the assignments or the parents are unaware of how to deal with homework issues.
What if you do not know how to complete your child’s homework?
Today’s academics are very different from ever before. It may be possible that your child is working with methods that you have never seen. You do not have to be able to teach your child how to complete the work in order to help with homework. Praise your child for his efforts and ask questions to check for understanding. If your child is struggling, you may want to use today’s technology as a guide. The Internet has many homework help sites. Of course, you can always discuss any concerns with your child’s teacher.
What if my child says he does have homework?
Make homework a nightly habit. If your child comments that the work is finished, ask to review it. If he says that he had no homework, create homework. Review previous lessons. Homework can be as simple as sitting down and reading with your child. Assume that your child has homework every night, even if the teacher does not assign it.
We are completing homework but my child is not turning it in.
Many children understand the lessons but have difficulty with responsibility. The teacher should notify you if your child is continuously not returning homework. If this is happening and you know that your child is completing the work, you may need to create a parent-teacher contact log. Have the teacher initial each day that the homework is turned in by the student. You should then in return initial the log when you work with your child on the homework at night. After a week or so of close observation, your child should understand that the irresponsibility is not tolerated.
Homework can be a wonderful opportunity for you to be involved in your child’s academic growth. Homework should not be a chore for parents. When parents are negative about the work, children also develop negative attitudes. Always encourage your child to do his/her best work. Be thankful for the opportunity to watch your child grow mentally. If homework becomes a problem for your family, discuss the issues with your child’s teacher.
