You don’t have to practice Extreme Couponing in order to be frugal and save money with grocery coupons. But you do need to know the basics of using coupons to get the best deals, otherwise you may wind up spending more and saving less.
Finding Coupons
Before you can use coupons, you’ll need to find them first. There are several ways to obtain coupons. Start with the following two sources to get the best selection.
The first most common source is the Sunday paper, where you will find Sunday insert coupons that you can clip. Get a subscription to your paper, buy extra papers in the store and ask friends and family to save the coupon inserts for you.
Next, you can go online, where you can print coupons using your computer and home printer. There are several places to get free coupons to print, such as freecoupons.com, smartsource.com and redplum.com. Printable coupons go fast, so you’ll need to grab them as soon as you see them.
Matching Coupons
To get the most value out of your coupons, you will want to use them in only two instances. The first is when you would normally purchase the product anyway. This way you will get automatic savings off of your grocery bill. To step up the savings, you’ll want to wait and use those coupons when the products go on sale. Matching coupons to a sale will get you the lowest prices on the products that you need.
For example, if you normally buy peanut butter, look for coupons that you can use. Then wait until the peanut butter goes on sale (usually every few weeks) and stock up on enough peanut butter to last you until the next sale. While you are waiting for the next sale, save any new peanut butter coupons that you find to use next time.
