I Couldn’t Do It Without Help

I am not one to get involved in politics. I have my own personal political views, but I tend to keep them to myself because I hate the contention it brings. However, some family members of mine got into a political debate and I couldn’t help but put my two cents in simply because it affects us as single mothers. There is a woman running for congress here in Utah who has said that she thinks that we should do away with all financial aid in regard to education. As a single mother this is frightening for me. I can honestly say that there is no way I would ever be able to attend school if I had not gotten the help that was provided to me as a single mom.

For some single mothers the thought of going back to school already seems almost impossible. Most of us are forced to work full time and to add school on top of that is extremely difficult. Without an education we are stuck in dead end jobs with little hope of making any real money. It is a challenge to simply provide a roof over our heads, to throw in the expense of school just simply isn’t a feasible option for most of us.

Grants and student loans make it possible for us to break the cycle. It gives us the opportunity to provide for our families on our own. If you take that help away, many women are left struggling to ever make ends meet for their children. So many single mothers are forced to take the help of welfare when they are trying support their families. If you take away their chance to further their education and get a better job, they are left in the system with no way of getting out. We need to give people the opportunity to help themselves, but for some of us, we just couldn’t do it without a little help.
