I Swore I Would Never Do This, But…

Before I became a mom, I swore that if I had kids I would never run all over town looking for things my kids needed and/or wanted. Then I became a mother and sure enough it seems like I find myself always running around getting stuff for Tyler.

Take Sunday for instance. I spent the better part of the day searching for a New Orleans Saints shirt. This week is homecoming at Tyler’s school and each day they have to wear different clothes. Today, for example, they had to wear pajamas for Lazy Monday. Wednesday they have to wear a flashy shirt with their school uniform pants (skirts for the girls -this is a catholic school and they don’t wear pants). Friday they have to wear a costume or their favorite team’s uniform.

Now, one thing you have to know about “real” New Orleanians- they support the Saints. They may talk about their skills or lack thereof but these guys are fanatics. In fact, Tyler’s father missed being in the delivery room when Tyler was born because he was watching a game. I’m not kidding. Tyler was born at 1:31 PM, the game started at 12 noon and his father sauntered in at 3 PM after the game was over and Tyler was sleepy snuggly in the nursery! But I digress.

I don’t like the Saints. Don’t like football in general but yet and still I was running all over trying to find a shirt in Tyler’s size. Every place that I went to had clothes that were either too large or too small.

“You can wear your Alabama Crimson Tide shirt.” I finally said in disgust. “Or how about an LSU shirt?” We had run across several stores with LSU gear in his size.

“No mama, it has to be the Saints. My daddy loves the Saints so I want a Saints shirt,” he screamed.

Luckily, I have until Thursday to find said shirt. Which means I have to either drive down to the French Quarter where I am sure I will be able to find one, or drive to the next suburb, Metairie, about 20 minutes away (if the traffic cooperates).

Neither of these choices is appetizing because I hate going to the French Quarter and the traffic in Metairie is usually horrible all day long. But as a concerned mom, I want my son to have his shirt. He feels he will stand out like a sore thumb if doesn’t dress appropriately. I know his life has been turned upside down and back again, so I try hard to keep him happy. Especially when he made all A’s – 2 A+’s in fact, on his report card last week. He’s doing well managing his allowance and he’s becoming a thoughtful, helpful little gentleman. Finding a Saint’s shirt in his size is the least I can do to show say thanks.

Next journey- finding a Wii before Christmas!
