It’s That Time of Year

It’s that time of year. You know the time when gym memberships take a leap and every one you know is making a resolution to lose weight, work out more and gym’s are lining up to court you for your business. There are two problems with this time of year though. New Year’s resolutions sound great, but too many people rush in to do too much, too fast and either drop out before March. Others will convince themselves that this is not for them because it’s too hard or worse, because they hurt themselves.

So What Do You Do?

Stop and take a deep breath. Yes, it’s the New Year. Yes, it feels like a time for a clean beginning and a good start, but don’t throw yourself so hard at the object of your resolution that you miss the goal. A resolution is about setting an achievable goal for you. It should be specific and it should be attainable.

Saying your resolution is to lose 50 pounds before Spring sounds commendable, but is it achievable or is it setting yourself up for failure? Instead of saying you want to lose 50 pounds, make it your resolution to be more consistent in your workout efforts. Instead of hitting the gym every once in a while, make it a goal to go at least twice a week in January. If you’ve done that by January 31st, maybe your February resolution will be to work out 3 times a week.

Positive Change with Positive Resolutions

Now, don’t let me talk you out of your resolutions or joining a gym or taking full advantage of that membership. But do let me talk you into making it work for you in a way that effects a positive change on your day to day living habits, because if you work out regularly, if you eat a healthier diet that goal of losing 50 pounds will become more than a resolution, it can become a reality.
