Letting Your House Go

Are you a busy mom? I know…that’s an oxymoron. What mom isn’t busy?

Just thinking about this upcoming week has my head spinning. A full workload, preparing paperwork and other documents for my son’s leave for basic training, finishing touches on a creative writing class I will be teaching for a week, professional pictures being taken, a going away party for my son, appointment with the recruiter and well, you get the picture.

Although the details are probably different, I would guess you have a lengthy list as well. So when we have days, weeks or even months where it feels like busyness has overtaken our lives, how do you handle the keeping of your home?

Do you let it go? I mean, it only makes sense, right? If you are swamped and barely have time to breathe, why would you worry about the state of your home?

I actually think that that is the very worst thing you could do and here’s why. Imagine you have just come off a week where you had a hundred plates spinning in the air.

Now you can finally breathe a little, as maybe you are down to just a few plates spinning. Life is still busy but manageable.

Yet you look at your house and suddenly you have to balance a few more plates because you let the laundry go, there is no food in the pantry, you can’t find important papers because of the mounting piles and the list goes on.

You are back to where you were…overwhelmed. But it’s unnecessary.

I make a commitment to myself that no matter how busy I am…I will not let certain things go in my home. I won’t let laundry pile up. I won’t let dust collect. I won’t run out of dishes or food.

It may require getting up earlier, staying up later, enlisting help or doing the bare minimum. But I won’t allow my house to go because it is going to end up being there anyway and much worse than it should have been.

What about you? Do you let the house go when you are busy or do you make every effort to keep it up?
