For most families, Thanksgiving activities are traditionally relegated to eating, watching football on TV, napping and talking. Not exactly a fun-filled day if you are a kid.
If you are planning to host the Turkey Day spread this year, you might consider including activities to entertain your youngest guests. By doing so you will not only make the holiday a memorable occasion for children, but also, by keeping them busy you can spend more time making merry with adult guests rather than breaking up fights and listening to a chorus of whines.
These low-budget kid-friendly crafts will keep your pint-sized guests entertained for hours:
Candy Cornucopia
Ingredients:
Sugar ice cream cones
Fruit snacks (the ones shaped like fruits, not like cartoon characters)
Swedish Fish or other gummy candies
Nuts
Chocolate frosting
Directions:
Fill each ice cream cone with a small amount of frosting.
Have kids add fruit snacks, gummy candies, and nuts to the cone to create a sweet-tasting Thanksgiving cornucopia.
Pilgrim Hat Cookies
Ingredients:
Large sugar cookies
Large marshmallows
Jelly beans
Melted chocolate
Directions:
Dip the cookies in the melted chocolate and place on wax paper lined trays.
Dip marshmallows in the melted chocolate, and then attach them to the cookies.
Use a little of the melted chocolate as adhesive to get the jelly beans to stick onto the hat as a buckle.
Chocolate Turkeys
Ingredients:
Double Stuff Oreos
Candy corn
Raisinets
Melted chocolate
Directions:
Open an Oreo cookie and use the half with the filling as the base for the turkey.
Place a second Oreo upright on the filling to make the turkey body.
Place five pieces of candy corn into the filling of the upright Oreo to make the turkey feathers.
Dip a Raisinet into the melted chocolate and press firmly on the front of the turkey body to make a head.
Place turkeys into refrigerator for about an hour to allow the chocolate to set before serving.
