North Dakota has the eligibility requirements for the state’s Medicaid program clearly listed and easy to locate. People who live in North Dakota can read over the information to learn if they, or their family members, are eligible for part of the North Dakota Medicaid program.
Medicaid is a public, or government run, form of health insurance. It is designed to provide affordable health insurance coverage for people who are low-income and who cannot afford to purchase a health plan from a private insurance company. The funding for Medicaid comes from the federal government and also from the government of an individual state.
In North Dakota, the Medicaid program is administered by the North Dakota Department of Human Services. Part of the state’s description of the Medicaid program is as follows:
“Medicaid was authorized in 1966 for the purpose of providing an effective base upon which to provide comprehensive and uniform medical services that enable persons previously limited by their circumstances to receive needed medical care.”
It is extremely easy to discover the eligibility requirements for Medicaid in North Dakota. The state has listed everything, in easy to read language, on their website. To qualify, a person must be a state resident of North Dakota. The person must also be a United States citizen or an alien who is lawfully admitted for permanent residence.
“Medicaid provides coverage to: children in foster care or subsidized adoption, children with disabilities (birth through 19), other children up to age 21, pregnant women, women with breast or cervical cancer, parents or caretakers of deprived children, workers with disabilities, other blind and disabled individuals, individuals age 65 or older, and low-income Medicare beneficiaries.
Who doesn’t it cover? It will not cover individuals who are adults between the ages of 21 and 65 who are not blind or disabled, pregnant, or a caretaker of deprived children. States can accept federal funding to expand their Medicaid to cover that group. It seems that North Dakota has chosen not to do so.
There are income limitations that must be met. An easy to read chart on the North Dakota website gives all the details about the exact amounts. There are also asset limits. There is no asset limit for children, families, or pregnant women in the Children and Families coverage group or the Women’s Way program. Certain types of assets, such as your home, one automobile, burial plans, self-employment property, and more will be excluded.
