While the Humane Society is busy trying to get McDonald’s to use cage-free hen raising practices, PETA is continuing to fight other battles.
The battle this week is with reality star Kim Kardashian. No, Kim didn’t wear fur or eat meat, but she did abuse a kitten, according to PETA. Kardashian posted a photo of herself holding a kitten by the scruff of the neck.
Now, a lot of people think this is perfectly acceptable (my husband being one – I personally don’t do it) because after all, mama cats carry their babies this way. But, mama cats don’t have thumbs either.
A PETA rep told New York Daily News that “Kim Kardashian isn’t the only person who mistakenly thinks that because a mother cat picks up her kittens by the scruff of the neck that a supportive hand under the rump isn’t needed.”
In her defense, the SPCA says it is okay to hold a kitten like this, but only briefly. The organization did add that seeing Kardashian hold the kitten like this “could lead others to mishandle animals.”
In other news, there is a new PETA ad which features a surprising image – that of deceased actress Bea Arthur. The ad, which appeared in Thursday’s Chicago Tribune, contained a surprising headline – “McCruelty: It’s enough to make Bea Arthur roll over in her grave.” The other day, I mentioned PETA was taking on McDonald’s for animal cruelty, but is this ad in poor taste?
Well, maybe not. Arthur was a long-time supporter of PETA and reportedly left money to the organization after her death last year. The ad went on to say “Death couldn’t stop this Golden Girl from fighting the Golden Arches’ cruel slaughter practices.”
PETA said the ad was used to “pressure McDonald’s to switch to a less violent, USDA-approved chicken-slaughter method,” which I had mentioned in another blog.
How does the ad end? As only Arthur could put it – “God’ll get you for that,” her famous line from “Maude.”
