Scary Trends in Baby Names

Leave it to Americans to find yet another way to immortalize pregnant teens.

Just when you thought paying 16 year olds cold, hard cash to allow TV cameras to follow their every move as new parents was something to cringe about, now the government reveals that the young reality TV stars have some of the hottest names in the country.

According to the Social Security Administration, the stars from MTV’s mega-popular show “Teen Mom,” are among the hottest trending names in the United States.

Scary!

I wish I were joking, but facts are facts. The Social Security Administration just released new data about babies born in the U.S. in 2010, and it appears that the nation’s obsession with reality television has propelled a mom and son duo from MTV’s “16 and Pregnant” and “Teen Mom,” to become the fastest trending names.

When Maci Bookout gave birth to her son Bentley Cadence Edwards in 2008, I highly doubt she had dreamt of impacting the world with her choice in monikers. Yet thanks to procreating Americans, who are endlessly fascinated with all things related to pop culture, a teen mom has revolutionized the latest baby name trends.

“‘Teen Mom’ is the winner of this year’s baby name wars,” Laura Wattenberg, creator of babynamewizard.com. announced on NBC’s “Today” show.

“It’s amazing to think that one teenage girl and her baby are changing America’s baby names.”

According to the Social Security Administration, the following are the top five most popular trending names for boys and girls:

BOYS

1. Bentley

2. Kellan

3. Knox

4. Enzo

5. Karter

GIRLS

1. Maci

2. Giuliana

3. Tiana

4. Quinn

5. Adalynn

It’s basically a who’s who of pop culture “icons.” On the boys’ list, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s son, Knox, placed at number three. Meanwhile, holding down the second spot is Kellan, as in Lutz, who plays Jacob in the crazy popular “Twilight” series.
