Want to get a bunch of six year olds to laugh like hyenas?
Two words: Mrs. Wimpydimple
Those two words set-off an explosion of side-splitting laughter that echoed throughout my daughter’s school.
Being guest reader has never been so rewarding.
Thanks, Scaredy-Cat, Splat!
I have a feeling that author Rob Scotton imagined a scenario very similar to the one I experienced in my daughter’s first grade class when he wrote the latest addition to his extremely popular SPLAT the SCAREDY-CAT series of children’s books.
Still, nothing says “thanks for taking time off from work to read to 20 wiggly, squiggly, chattering first graders” than complete silence peppered by fits of laughter courtesy of a hilariously written book with eye-popping illustrations that practically jump off the pages and into your lap.
Scaredy-Cat, Splat! is a quintessential kid-friendly Halloween tale. It features a not-so scary black, bug-eyed cat named Splat, who desperately wants to spook his friends with a diabolical costume and earn the title of “Scariest Cat” in… wait for it… Mrs. Wimpydimple’s class.
Unfortunately, as the Splat shows us, things don’t always go according to one’s plan. It’s a great lesson to drive home to kids of all ages. However, Scotton doesn’t force feed the issue. Rather, he uses the clearly well-fed cat, Splat, to show kids that winning can come about in a variety of ways, and sometimes when you least expect it.
If you are looking for a Halloween-themed book to share with a group of youngsters at a party or trunk-or-treat event, or you simply want a seasonal book to read at bedtime with your own cat-loving kid, then I would highly recommend getting a copy of Scaredy-cat, Splat!
The cute book is filled with all the Halloween essentials, including ghost stories and jack-o-lanterns, costumes and candy, as well as spiders and silly surprises. It also features an adorable subplot between Splat the Cat and his BFF, who just happens to be a mouse. Seymour is a pudgy and practical rodent, who Splat can’t seem to keep his eyes off of, but in a very non-Tom and Jerry kind of way.
Scaredy-cat, Splat! is available in major book stores. You can also purchase a copy by visiting the book’s publisher, HarperCollins at its website: www.HarperCollins.com.
If you can’t get enough of the slightly neurotic feline and his cast of endearing characters, then consider reading other books in the series, including: Splat the Cat; Love, Splat; and Merry Christmas, Splat.
