Farmhouse sinks are really a big trend at the moment. Everyone loves the look. Many homeowners have fun finding a real vintage sink to fit their home, whether it is a farmhouse style or not. Older sinks can really add a sense of style, nostalgia and a feeling of being true to your older home. But before you install your vintage sink, take a look at this article. You may just think twice.
Let’s start with that farmhouse sink, as an example of a vintage sink. While the style is definitely in demand, you might find that the trend has passed, leaving you with the option to live with the sink or upgrade it. If you go to sell your home, you may find that not everyone appreciated the farmhouse sink.
One issue that most homeowners have with the farmhouse sink style is that it is very flat on the bottom. This means that water doesn’t drain easily from it. Very often, you will have to physically move the water to the drain with your hand to prevent standing water in your sink.
Another style of sink is a vintage sink with a built-in back splash (sometimes in a farmhouse style). This is a strong look, and again, when you put your home on the market, it may not appeal to all buyers. Because of the large back splash in the sink, you may be limited to decorating your kitchen, such as putting up tile, etc. Also, a large back splash could interfere with a window, so take your measurements carefully.
Vintage sinks also have one other issue that could compromise your kitchen’s efficiency. Older sinks tend to have smaller drains than do modern sinks. The smaller drain will inhibit the later installation of a garbage disposal.
Vintage sinks may also need to be re-glazed, a process that may have to be repeated on the sink, depending on the wear and tear it is subjected to in your kitchen.
If you really love the look of vintage sinks, consider installing the modern equivalent. Kohler makes a few different vintage look sinks that have the best of modern design incorporated into them, so you can get the vintage style without the drawbacks.
