It’s funny how Mother Nature tends to dictate a parent’s schedule. For example, I have a slew of family members living on the East Coast who are bracing for a major winter storm. Significant snow is predicted to make traveling a nightmare for residents in Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and New Jersey. The storm has forced my cousin to cancel a business trip to Boston. Instead, she’ll spend the snow day trying to figure out how to keep her four kids entertained indoors.
If you are looking for ways to keep the kiddos from contracting a severe case of cabin fever, or perhaps, you need some kid-friendly activities for your upcoming Super Bowl party, then consider the following:
CHOPSTICK RELAY
Materials:
Chopsticks
Unshelled peanut, walnut, or other type of nut
Acorn
Cranberry
Pea
Small plate
Directions:
Give each player a set of chopsticks.
Place the unshelled nut, acorn, cranberry, and a pea on a small plate next to the oldest player.
Have the oldest use the chopsticks to pass each object, from largest to smallest, to the person on his right. That child then takes it with her chopsticks and passes it along to the next player.
The object is to try to get all four objects back to the starting plate without dropping any of them.
If your children are really young, then use a teaspoon instead of chopsticks.
FLASHLIGHT LIMBO
Materials:
Two flashlights
Directions:
Clear a floor space and turn off the lights.
Have two taller kids each hold a flashlight while standing a few feet apart from each another. Turn on the flashlights, and have the two kids point them at each other to create a level beam of light for the others to limbo under.
Turn on some music and let the fun begin.
PENGUIN RACE
Materials:
Beanbags or Hacky Sacks
Directions:
Line up children and tell them they are penguins.
Have the kids stand side by side with their beanbags or Hacky Sacks on top of their feet. The beanbags are the penguin’s “eggs.”
Players try to shuffle across the room without dropping their “eggs.” The first one to finish line wins.
