We are in somewhat unique (in our area) position of having three children, not two not four but three. Most people don’t understand three. It isn’t an even number. Why stop at three, why didn’t you stop at two?
A family of five bothers people because they don’t know what to think of it. Is it a large family or a small family? For us it is a just right family, of course, but the world at large doesn’t see it that way.
For example, if we want to book a hotel room, we are mostly told that the maximum capacity is four in a room, meaning that a family of five requires an extra room for the one extra person.
We can never sign up for Groupon or Living Social discounts for tickets or events, because they are all for a family of four. The same thing for sweepstakes. If we were ever to win our dream vacation to Disney World, or a trip through Europe, one of us would have to stay home.
Hot dogs are sold in packages of eight, so while we may have enough buns (which are sold in packages of 10), we will never have enough hot dogs to go around, and yet two packages are too much.
The other day we stopped at a moderately priced family restaurant for some dinner. Of course all of the booths were sized for just four people. We are used to this and often have to separate into two booths or a booth and a small table to fit us all. We aren’t quite large enough to qualify for the large round tables that seat six or eight.
The restaurant was running a buffet special when you bought four. We confused the heck out of the waiter, the manager, the bus boy and the cashier when we asked if we could add on a fifth. I’m used to dividing things by five or by three, but apparently they weren’t. Still wanting our business, they opted to give my six year old the senior discount.
