Focus on the Candidates – Carly Fiorina

Focus on the Candidates Carly Fiorina Find more family blogs at Families.comThis blog is part of the series that focuses on the candidates who are running for President of the United States in the 2016 election. This blog focuses on Carly Fiorina.

According to her official website, Carly Fiorina earned a Master of Business Administration in Marketing from the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland.

In 1999, she was recruited to serve as the Chief Executive Officer of Hewlett-Packard (1999 – 2005). She was the first woman to lead a Fortune 500 company. In 2010, Carly Fiorina ran unsuccessfully for United States Senate in California against Senator Barbara Boxer (Democrat).

Health Care
According to Ballotpedia, Carly Fiorina wants to repeal “Obamacare” but does like the part that prevents insurers from excluding coverage for people who have pre-existing conditions. (She herself is a breast cancer survivor.)

Bloomberg reports that she wants to “allow states to administer high-risk pools and to help those who are truly needy”, and that she thinks the federal government can assist in funding. She is interested in trying out the free market for health insurance.

As far as vaccinations, her views are in line with current state laws. All 50 states have specific requirements regarding vaccinations for childcare and school-aged children. She encourages parents to vaccinate their children and supports a school’s right to say that children that are unvaccinated cannot attend public school.

Women’s Health Care
Carly Fiorina wants to defund Planned Parenthood. She is in favor of a government shutdown for the purpose of defunding Planned Parenthood.

She supports the idea that religious businesses should not be required to cover all forms of birth control in their employee’s health care plans. She also doesn’t believe that women should be able to access contraception without having to pay a co-pay.

Immigration
In 2010, Carly Fiorina said she supported the DREAM Act (which gives legal status to people who were born in the United States illegally as children). She does not want undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as adults to be given citizenship. Her view is that doing so would be unfair to those who immigrate legally.

Education
Carly Fiorina is in favor of No Child Left Behind. She wants national educational standards but also wants to give local school districts maximum control.

Jobs
At the Iowa State Fair, Carly Fiorina said that minimum wage should be a state issue, and not a federal issue. She also believes that minimum wage jobs are where people start, so they can learn skills to get a better job. She said that if the minimum wage becomes too high that people in poor neighborhoods will have less opportunities.
