San Diego is home to gorgeous beaches, awe-inspiring architecture, vibrant cultural events and near-perfect weather. Fortunately, partaking in all the SoCal city has to offer doesn’t have to put a strain on your family’s budget.
If you are looking to soak up some fun and sun in San Diego this summer, but don’t have a ton of cash to burn, consider checking out these free options:
Grunion Run: This popular summer event celebrates a natural phenomenon featuring huge schools of tiny fish. When the tide is high and the moon is full hundreds of humans gather to watch thousands of small grunion fish swim ashore to mate and bury their eggs in the sand before riding the waves back out to sea. The amazing spectacle is as eye-popping as it is educational.
La Jolla Cove: Whether you are searching for the perfect spot to watch a summer sunset or you want your kids to witness sea lions playing along the shoreline, La Jolla Cove is the place to be. Known by locals as the “most spectacular natural setting in the world,” the picturesque cove is free and open to all to enjoy a summer day in the great outdoors.
Star Gazing: Get a hands-on astronomy lesson for free on the first Wednesday of every month at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park. The “Gazin’ with the Experts” event is put on by members of the San Diego Astronomy Association. The fun starts at dusk when the experts set-up huge telescopes and offer guests stunning views of the moon, planets and stars.
Embarcadero: Take a leisurely summer stroll along the downtown Embarcadero to get a crash course in fine art. The area is lined with impressive public art sculptures, tributes and memorials, which celebrate San Diego’s international ties, cultural diversity, military significance and unique waterfront environment.
