Is your home a sanctuary for your family? Most of us can answer “yes,” at least some of the time. Our homes are the places where our families feel most comfortable and most comforted. Each member feels safe, accepted, relaxed and able to be him or herself. That is why we work so hard to make a house into a home.
Of course, there are times when home may not be the sanctuary we need. It’s too easy for life’s demands to clutter our minds as well as our homes. The spaces that should feel restful tend to become chaotic, and it doesn’t take long for this to happen. When we cannot relax in our own homes, we begin to feel stressed, worn out, and perhaps even irritable.
Our bodies and minds require rest and restoration so we can tackle the next challenge life presents. By keeping our homes clean, organized, and running smoothly, we also create a more relaxed atmosphere. We can enjoy our down time and truly feel refreshed and invigorated when it’s time begin a new day.
Just as comfort foods make us feel at home, furnishings, decor, and the state of order in the home can and do as well. A favorite blanket makes a space feel special. Decorating your child’s room with a favorite color, character, or theme can make the room feel more like his or her own space to unwind and be comfortable. On the other hand, calm, soothing colors and luxurious fabrics make the bedroom or bath into a retreat for tired parents.
You know your family better than anyone else does; you are the authority when it comes to making your home a sanctuary for your spouse, yourself, and your children. A home doesn’t have to be fancy, or filled with all the latest trends. It simply needs to be welcoming, comfortable, and filled with love.
