Long Term Clients are a Freelancer’s Best Friend

If you are considering starting a home – based business as a freelance writer or some other type of freelance professional but you are worried about constantly having to look for work, this post is for you. It is only natural to wonder whether you will have to spend a lot of time looking for work in order to keep your plate (and your bank account) full enough all the time. That said I am happy to tell you that you do not have to let that fear get in the way of pursuing your home – based dreams.

When I started my freelance writing business, I was concerned about whether I would be able to sustain it. I had heard many stories about freelance writers going long stretches without work, and of how freelancing is a feast or famine type of profession. Fortunately, I was dedicated enough to finding a way to work from home so that I could stay at home with my son that I set that concern aside and started my writing business anyways.

While my writing business and my son were both in their infancy, I did do a lot of looking for work. Fortunately, it did not take long to find my first few projects and I was able to find new work whenever I needed it. That was okay, but it got better. Within a few months, I had landed a long term assignment. I was excited because that assignment provided (and provides, to this day) work that fills much of the time that I have available for working. A few months later, I landed another long term assignment that provided just the right amount of additional work to fill out my schedule.

The potential for building one or more long term business relationships is an exciting part of starting a freelance services business. If you do good work and you are good to work with, you will find that you are able to build relationships that will sustain your business for the long term. While it is reasonable to be concerned about whether you will have to constantly look for work when you become a freelancer, I would encourage you to at least give it a try if you are able to. You may be pleasantly surprised at the opportunities that come your way.
