Ah, summer; a time to bond with your loved ones in the great outdoors. Whether you cherish trips to the beach, enjoy hiking at area parks or prefer barbecuing in your own backyard, the season of sun allows for a ton of fun.
The key to making the most of summer vacation is to find activities that fit your family’s budget. Whether you are pinching pennies or have some extra cash to burn, top tourist destinations are hoping you will spend some time in their neck of the woods.
For example, San Diego is pulling out all the stops to attract visitors to the region this summer. The city and surrounding area which features more than 70 miles of pristine beaches is hosting a plethora of affordable family-friendly events this season, including:
Julian Gold Rush Days: This free event takes place on June 1 and 2 and celebrates the 1870s discovery of gold in the historic mountain town of Julian. You and your family can take part in a full weekend of activities, including gold panning, gold mine tours, historic skits, pioneer games and opportunities to meet miners, mountain men and cowboys.
San Diego County Fair: This year’s fair kicks off on June 8th and runs through July 4th at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. The annual event draws visitors of all ages and with this year’s theme of “Game On!” you are sure to have fun at the fair regardless of your budget. In addition to the live concerts and livestock exhibits, you can visit home and hobby displays, woodworking workshops and an award-winning flower show.
Independence Day: San Diego and its surrounding communities commemorate America’s birthday with a variety of Fourth of July festivities, including the massive Big Bay Boom fireworks show over San Diego Bay. The pyrotechnic extravaganza is the largest fireworks display in the county. Nearby La Jolla also hosts a popular 4th of July gathering featuring spectacular fireworks over La Jolla Cove beginning at 9:00 p.m. If you have kids, check out LEGOLAND California Resort’s Independence Day shindig. The Carlsbad property is hosting a “Red, White and BOOM!” event with special family activities available throughout the day and fireworks starting at dusk.
