Tomorrow is the annual ward breakfast to honor the Fourth of July. It is a fun event every year where we take some time to honor the veterans that have served our country. It is also a time when we can reflect on the great blessings and privileges that come to us as a result of being citizens of the United States. With all this in mind I still present the ten funniest things about the annual ward breakfast.
10) The syrup covered kids climbing all over their parents, the chairs, and the tables. Not to mention the sticky door handles, windows and anywhere else the children go.
9) At least one person shows up in his pajamas. It is usually a teenager routed out of bed by his parents. The tired rumpled look is quite popular at eight in the morning.
8) The cold pancakes that you get, if you get one. It is really scary to be at the back of the line, and wonder if you will end up with one. Of course they do make more, but no one likes to wait.
7) The year that breakfast cereal was all that was on the menu. Everyone brought his or her own box!
6) It is the one ward activity where the men are usually cooking. They handle almost the entire thing, from decorations (none) to food to the flag ceremony.
5) This is the only time of year when pancakes and watermelon are on the same menu. A unique combination, something you will not forget!
4) The wonder when you go to bed the night before, of whether or not you will actually get up in time to make it to the church breakfast. If you have toddlers the answer is likely yes . . . teenagers it is most likely a no.
3) Water and pancakes or lemonade and pancakes. There never seems to be enough milk to go around and so the men improvise.
2) The one activity when it is okay to sit outside in the parking lot to eat. The tables (if there are any) may make it more difficult to find parking so arrive early.
1) Arriving late to realize you missed the food. Luckily you made it in time for the flag ceremony!
In all seriousness, this is one of my favorite activities during the year because of the flag ceremony. It is important that we remember what our country stands for and the sacrifice of those who brought us the freedoms we enjoy. I am truly grateful to be an American.
