10 Reasons I’m Thankful I’m Homeschooling

I know (or at least I hope) you’re not doing any home schooling today. Today is a day to be thankful for what we have and to enjoy those we love. But just in case you find your way to the computer after all the dishes are done, here are my top ten reasons that I’m thankful to be home schooling:

#1. I enjoy my kids. I like being around them–even 24/7. I think they are fun and we do fun things together but truth be told the real reason I like being around them is that they offer a fresh perspective on life. They get excited over those things that I had thought were mundane and their lives are full of possibilities.

#2. I enjoy teaching. Teaching is challenging–it’s true. But I enjoy the challenge of making my kids’ imaginations spark. I also like learning and you can’t teach and NOT learn. So I love getting to teach the things that I now find so interesting.

#3. My kids love each other. I know that siblings who go to school can also be close. But I love that my kids experience being close to each other. They like playing together and while they all have their own friends, at the end of the day it’s each other that they want to talk to.

#4. I am grateful my husband gets to actively participate in their education. If my kids were at school, my husband would likely participate on weekends. As it is now, he gets to teach them all the time.

#5. I am thankful for rich family discussions. Everything and anything is discussed in a home schooling family. Most recently, we’ve been learning about Ancient Egypt. . .combined with how a car engine works. Where else would you get that kind of information lumped together?

#6. I am thankful for a flexible schedule. We can take vacations whenever we want without worry about the kids missing school. When the twins were born, we were able to take the time needed to recover and bond with our new babies. Our flexible schedule allows for more family time.

#7. I am thankful that the possibilities are limitless. My kids can learn whatever they want. And because the whole world is open to them, they are filled with questions and ideas. It’s like going on an exciting treasure hunt–all the time.

#8. I am grateful for the extra time home schooling allows our family. No doubt about it–school takes up time. Homeschooling on the other hand, allows our family lots of quality time.

#9. I am grateful for being able to choose the values I teach my kids. I am glad that I can have discussions about Biblical principles during home school. I am grateful that my children are free in their young lives from other hindrances that might keep them from walking with God. I am grateful that they are free to explore Christian thought and ideas without fear of being made fun of.

#10. I am grateful that my kids love learning. They love ancient history, science and math. They love to read–curling up with a good book is just as fun of an activity as playing a computer game or watching T.V.

So there you have it–10 reasons why I’m grateful I’m home schooling! Have a wonderful day and a Happy Thanksgiving!
