Yesterday we looked at changing our attitude which sounds easier to do than it is. So here are 10 practical suggestions for changing our attitude towards life and circumstances.
1. Focus on God and who He is, rather than ourselves and the circumstances. This is what Stephen did when he was being stoned for preaching about Jesus, Acts 7.
2. Remember who you are: ‘children of God,’ I John 3:2, ‘a chosen race, a royal priesthood…a people for God’s own possession,’ 1 Peter 2:9.
3. Remember Christ lives in you, Galatians 2:20, so you don’t have to try and cope with everything on your own but can draw on His power, strength and enabling.
4. Ask Him for His help and wisdom. God promises those who need wisdom will receive it, James 1:5. But it doesn’t happen automatically. We need to ask and we need to ask in faith.
5. Immerse yourselves in God’s Word. The quickest way to change our attitude is to get back to God’s Word which has the power to transform us, Romans 12:2.To change our hearts and minds, to change us from the inside.
6. Find one close friend you can trust. Share your difficulties with them and meet together to pray with and for each other.
7. Put yourself in a position to help others and seek to be a blessing to them. Often what happens is that when we set out to help others, we end up being blessed in the process.
8. Continue to meet with God’s people on a regular basis and do not neglect getting together for worship and to learn more of God. It is very difficult to be a Christian in isolation and not what God wants for us, Hebrews 10:25.
9. Read through the book of Proverbs. It is filled with lots of wisdom which will help us in whatever problems we face in life. The advice in Proverbs is as varied as the problems we face, Proverbs 3:2-3,5-6,9-10, Proverbs 9:10, Proverbs 10:1,9, Proverbs 19:21, Proverbs 23:12,17-18, Proverbs 28:20,27, Proverbs 29:20 are a few worth reading. There are many others. Try and memorize some of those verses or other bible verses to encourage you when times are tough.
10. ‘Give thanks in all circumstances,’ 1 Thessalonians 5:18. Notice it does not say for all circumstances but in. So there is something in every circumstance that we can thank God for. We have to look for it and find it.
Bible verses taken from the New American Standard Version, except for 1 Thessalonians 5:18 which is from the New International Version
