10 Ways to Cut Your Grocery Bill

Who couldn’t cut their grocery bill down a bit? Aside from rent or a mortgage, food tends to be the biggest monthly expense that most people have. Just saving a small percentage on your food bill can yield big dollar savings. And if you use all of these strategies, you’ll actually save a large percentage.

Here are 10 ways to cut your grocery bill.

1. Use everything you have on hand. Take a good look at your pantries, your fridge and your freezer. What meals could you make without buying anything? Take everything out so you can see exactly what is in the back of your food storage. Use up what you have before it expires, and you’ll save money.

2. Buy groceries in bulk. Stock up on the items you use regularly whenever they go on sale. If you find chicken at 79 cents a pound, buy as much as you can so you don’t have to spend $1.29 a pound or more.

3. Use your freezer. You can store bulk purchases, freeze food that might go bad before you could use it and fill the freezer with bulk cooking meals.

4. Cook as much from scratch as you can. The less pre-preparation a meal has, the less money you will pay for it. One of those boxed bakes can cost almost $4, or you can make your own for about $1.50.

5. Use a price book. A price book is a way of keeping track of the lowest prices on the products you use. This will allow you to buy your items at the least expensive price. So, if you know that you can get flour for 99 cents for five pounds, then there is no need to buy it at a store that sells it for $2.19.
