I am not sure it is actually legal to put “boring’ in the same sentence with anything having to do with chocolate. I’m sure there’s a law somewhere. But if you are tired of the same old (dare I say it?) boring brownie recipe. . .here is a list of ways to put the pizazz into a regular brownie recipe or into a mix!
1. Chips
Not potato chips but consider adding chocolate chips, white chocolate chips or butter scotch chips to the batter before baking.
2. Frosting
Aside from giving your kids a massive sugar rush, frosting on top of brownies is just plain yummy.
3. S’mores Brownies
Immediately after removing your brownies from the oven sprinkle them with marshmallows. (They should melt from the heat of the brownies but you can also stick them back in the oven for a few minutes.) Cover with graham crackers and pourable chocolate frosting.
4. Rocky Road Heaven
Top hot brownies with marshmallows, chopped walnuts and chocolate chips.
5. Banana
Mash a banana and mix it in with the moist ingredients before you add the flour. It makes the brownies extra moist and adds a hint of banana to them.
6. Black Forest
Top with chocolate frosting, canned cherry pie filling, and whipped cream. (Okay, you don’t have to add the whip cream but I’m a sucker for whipped cream.)
7. Caramel, Toffee and Coffee
Add strong brewed or instant coffee instead of vanilla. Add toffee bits and walnuts to the batter before baking. After the brownies have cooled, frost with chocolate frosting. Top with caramel ice cream topping.
8. Mile High Brownies
I gave these meringue topped brownies their moniker because the peaks for the meringue remind of me of Denver International Airport. In any case, while the brownies are baking, make the meringue by beating 3 egg whites and 1 tablespoon of sugar until stiff peaks form. Top slightly cooled brownies with meringue and put back into the oven for a few more minutes until the tips of the meringue are browned.
9. Tropical Brownies
Add macadamia nuts to the batter before baking. Once the brownies are finished cool for about 20 minutes. Add white chocolate chips, coconut, and drained pineapple to the top. Drizzle with melted chocolate chips.
10. Layered Mud Brownies
Take jello pudding mix and make the pudding according to package directions for making pie. When the brownies come out of the oven and are slightly cooled, spread ½ of the pudding batter over the brownies. Add half a carton of non-dairy whipped topping (like cool whip) to the rest of the pudding mix. Add that to the layer of pudding on top of the brownies. Crush Oreo cookies and sprinkle on top!
