Too many job seekers don’t prepare themselves properly for the most important part of their job search, the interview process. Although your impressive resume may get you an interview, you must prepare yourself for the interview. To distinguish yourself from the many other job applicants who have also received an interview there are a number of things you should to do adequately prepare yourself for the interview.
First, you need to develop your personal themes for the interview. Knowing what an employer will discuss during an interview gets you a leg up on your competition and impresses the employer. You will appear to be very prepared and organized, but it will also prepare you to discuss your skills and qualification that you can offer to the prospective employer much better and sell yourself to the prospective employer. Following the twelve steps to better prepare yourself for that all-important interview. Think of specific examples in your background that will apply to each step.
I will discuss these twelve steps in more detail but right now I will give a brief example of each step. Stay tuned for future articles to learn more about each step.
1. The first step is to display your interest in the business area you are applying.
2. Provide your motivation and purpose for wanting the position.
3. Be able to thoroughly explain your skills.
4. Describe your acts of professionalism, persistence, and responsibility.
5. Describe instances of creativity and leadership.
6. Explain your qualifications for the position specific to the duties of the job.
7. Explain how you will “fit” into the organization.
8. Discuss any management and interpersonal skills.
9. Discuss your problem-solving ability.
10. Mention all of your accomplishments related to the position.
11. Mention your career goals and objectives.
12. Mention some of your personal interests and hobbies.
