2008 Oscar Fashion

Did you honestly think I would overlook this year’s fashion at the Academy Awards? I definitely had some opinions about the outfits, although I must say the guys for the most part were well dressed but dull. Even Johnny Depp looked normal!

For the women, I must say that I didn’t really like Marion Cotillard’s dress. Yes, it was kind of pretty, but didn’t you think it made her look a bit like a mermaid with all the scales? Okay, okay, I know, she is French; she innately knows more about fashion than I do.

Moving on, I thought Jennifer Garner looked stunning in her Oscar de la Renta black strapless. But, where was Ben? Was he too busy making the comedy video with Jimmy Kimmel? People seemed to have a problem with Sarah Larson’s light blue and pink dress (hey, Easter is quickly approaching!), but good grief, she had the night’s best accessory on her arm – George Clooney!

Cameron Diaz has been bashed in the past for poor Oscar fashion choices. She looked nice the other night in her pink Dior by John Galliano, but – is it just me or does she wear pink a lot? And, what was with the no jewelry thing? Seriously, she has a strapless gown on with no necklace, no bracelet, not even any earrings! I will note that I saw a ring on her finger, but that was it. Strapless was also big this year, but I think Amy Adams, with her beautiful red hair and elegant emerald Proenza Schouler gown pulled it off the best.

I am not a fan of “Grey’s Anatomy,” but I thought Katherine Heigl looked beautiful, from the Marilyn Monroe hair to the red dress with the single strap – just flawless. She was my favorite of the night. Red seemed to be the big color of the night and Renee Zellweger looks gorgeous in it – too bad her Carolina Herrera gown was a listless silver. It just made her look too washed out.

I know Nicole Kidman is pregnant and she is usually faultless on the red carpet, but I thought it looked like she had Christmas tinsel around her neck this year. I am sure it was thousands upon thousands of dollars worth of diamond, but it just looked weird to me.

I cannot find much talk about Best Screenplay winner Diablo Cody’s leopard print dress. But, it went well with her image, her punk black hair, and her tattoos. Definitely not typical Oscar, but fit her well.

There were only two dresses this year that truly struck me as hideous. Tilda Swinton won the Oscar for Best Actress, but what was that she wearing? It looked like she raided Mrs. Roper’s closet from “Three’s Company!” I could have gone with a Lanvin dress with two long sleeves or two short sleeves but mixed? I know she is a serious actress, but that was one ugly dress she had on.

Next up is really hitting below the belt. Surely Mrs. Daniel Day-Lewis, actress Rebecca Miller, heard the buzz that he was a sure thing to win Best Actor, so you would have thought she would have picked her dress with care. To me, it looked like it was picked at the Goodwill. Honestly, I have better-looking dresses in MY closet. The whole look was terrible from the zebra print shoes all the way up the black dress with those terrible jeweled brooches on it, but the weirdest thing was the red shoulder bows tying the dress. It looked like she took leftover Christmas bows and added them to the dress at the last minute.

What did you think? Who was the best and worst dressed this year?
