3 Healthy Cooking Oils

Did you know that using healthy cooking oil as opposed to corn oil will cut the fat in your dish almost by half, not to mention the fact that it will provide other health boosts to your meal? Substituting a healthy cooking oil for regular vegetable oil is very easy to do. Here’s the skinny on 6 of the most healthy cooking oils.

Enova Oil

Already marketed in Japan, this is essentially a hybrid oil of soybean and canola oils. Not only claiming to be healthier, it claims to actually help you lose weight when eaten with other parts of a healthy diet.

Enova oil is less easily absorbed into your body. This means that you can use more Enova oil and actually consume less calories that you would be consuming if you were using just plain vegetable oil. What’s key about Enova oil is that it is mostly made up of diacylglycerols (DAG) as opposed to triacylglycerols (TAG). (TAG is what most of the cooking oils are currently made of.) DAG does not get reassembled in the small intestines as fat, which means that it is more prone to being absorbed by the liver and then used as energy.

EVOO

EVOO is the term Rachel Ray coined to stand for extra virgin olive oil. It is the least processed version of all olive oils. It is also the most flavorful. EVOO is high in monounsaturated fats and usually contains omega-3 and 6 fatty acids as well, helping to maintain blood cholesterol levels. As far as I’m concerned, EVOO is the staple of good Italian cooking. I personally don’t like it however for other types of cooking where I need oil. (Think about putting EVOO in your brownie batter. . .definitely not my cup of tea!)

Canola Oil

The undisputed champion of domestic cooking oil, canola oil consists mainly of monounsaturated fat (60 per cent). Canola oil also contains an essential omega-3 fatty acid as an extra supplement. Canola oil is always my first choice to replacing vegetable oil in cooking. Baked goods have no change in texture when you use canola oil instead of plain vegetable oil and canola oil behaves very much like regular vegetable oil. (As opposed to EVOO which will smoke up the whole house once it gets hot enough!)
