Want to read the latest best seller or the book series that everyone is talking about but don’t want to actually pay the ridiculous cover prices on books? Here are three ways that you can still enjoy the latest books and still save money.
Have a Personal Book Exchange
Thanks to a friend of mine, I am now enjoying several books in a popular series. She lends me three or four of the books at a time. She is also welcome to borrow books from my personal collection as well. When borrowing books from a friend, especially well-loved books, it is important to keep them clean and in good shape. To do this, I remove the dust jackets from hard cover books and am very careful about how I take care of them.
If you are an avid reader, set up a book circle exchange with several friends. You can rotate your purchases of the latest best seller, in effect, getting to read two, three, four or more best sellers for the price of one.
Purchase Books at a Discount
There are several ways to purchase new books at a discount. The big box stores, such as Target often discount new releases and best sellers. Warehouse grocery stores offer discounts on new books. Then there is online. Amazon discounts both print and electronic books, plus you have the opportunity to purchase used but mint condition books from private sellers for less than the cover price. Half.com, an eBay company also sells discounted books.
Hunt the Goodwill
You might not think of the Goodwill, a thrift store chain, as a place for new books, but this store can be an excellent source of best sellers mere months after they are released. That is because many people rush out to buy popular books, read them quickly and then move on to new books. This means that if you hunt the shelves frequently, you can buy your best sellers at $1 to $2 instead of $15 to $30 a piece.
