We’re a huge lover of all things Disney, heck, we were married at Disney, but until recently I never thought of going on a Disney Cruise. Initially, my resistance to the idea of a Disney Cruise was the expense of it versus just going to the parks themselves. After all, as my daughter summed up, Disney World has lots and lots of rides – a cruise has just a boat.
Not Just a Boat
A Disney Cruise is not just a boat. While the cost may be expensive, there are some great deals out there for 3 day cruises that you can combine with your Disney World vacation and 7 day cruises that you can take just for the sake of the cruise. But going on a Disney Cruise isn’t just going for a boat ride to various ports – it’s not a means to an end – the Cruise itself – that’s the thing. You’re probably not convinced, but let me share a few of the reasons that changed my mind.
5 Great Reasons
Reason #1 – Disney Cruises cater to couples, families, singles, children and teenagers. In other words, they cater to everyone that could possibly want to go on a Cruise. There are areas for children specifically that feature facilitated activities, playgrounds, interactive games and even a movie theater. There’s a family only swimming pool where the kids can play with other kids, splash and have fun. And parents, you can drop your kids off in the kids centers and leave them to have fun with their peers. Parents receive a pager that allows their kids to contact them whenever they are needed.
Reason #2 – Disney Cruises visit a number of exotic locations through the Bahamas and the Caribbean. Future cruises will be offered to the Mediterranean and more. Not only can you enjoy the cruise itself, but you can enjoy the culture and beaches of the various destinations.
Reason #3 – Your restaurant dining experience rotates every evening to a different onboard restaurant, but your wait staff goes with you. Which means your waiter or waitress will always be someone who knows your likes and dislikes, you’ll also discover that the food is great and the atmosphere is fantastic. My favorite restaurant idea is the animated dining room that starts off in black and white and gradually turns into a colorful palate throughout the dining experience.
Reason # 4 – The design of the ships affords a lot of seaside view rooms, but even if your room doesn’t look out on the ocean, you are on a boat. You can go see the ocean from just about anywhere on the ship. You can also book a suite for slightly more, but it gives you space especially if you’re traveling with children. (Plan ahead for this by booking at least six months in advance)
Reason #5 – Castaway Cay is Disney’s personal island. Like the ships, the island has areas dedicated for teenagers, families and adults only. There are beaches, sting ray observation areas and much more. The private island is usually the last stop (saving the best for last) of a cruise before it heads back to Port Canaveral in Florida.
