5 Kitchen Cabinet Materials

If you don’t know where to start when considering a remodel of your kitchen cabinets, you’ll love this article. It is all about the five different materials you can use to create your kitchen cabinets. You are no longer just limited to wood (although we’ll cover that, too), instead check out all of your options in these five different materials before you design your dream kitchen.

Today’s kitchen cabinetry comes in a wide variety of options to suit anyone’s tastes and budget. Here is a quick description of the options in kitchen cabinet materials. You’ll be surprised by all of the choices.

Wood

The cabinets themselves are usually made out of plywood or furniture-grade particle board with wood veneers that are adhered to it. The cabinet doors may also be a veneer, or they may be solid wood.

Eco-Friendly

There are a broad range of cabinet materials that are considered eco-friendly. These materials can consist of everything from renewable bamboo to reclaimed wood from old barns. Basically, anything that is considered easily renewable, reclaimed or recycled is eco-friendly.

Metal

Metal cabinets are growing in popularity. The cabinets are the same as for wood, with metal (usually stainless steel) veneers attached to plywood or particleboard. Doors may be veneer as well, or glass or acrylic panels that have been set into a stainless steel or an aluminum frame.

Laminate

Just as in laminate countertops, laminate cabinets feature layers of plastic and paper resins that are bonded to plywood or that furniture-grade particleboard. Laminate cabinet doors feature flat or grooved designs, and seams can sometimes be noticeable.

Thermofoil

A new addition to kitchen cabinets, this material consists of vinyl that has been headed and molded over medium density fiberboard (MDF). Thermofoil comes in a large variety of styles and patterns.
