5 Reasons to Try Meditation

Meditation has been used for thousands of years and offers a variety of physiological, psychological and spiritual benefits. If you have considered trying meditation, there are many reasons to do it.

Meditation helps to improve your health. There have been studies conducted at the Medical College of Georgia and other institutions that have shown improvements in blood pressure, decreased risk for heart disease and stroke, decreased pain and stress levels in patients with cancer, fibromyalgia and lower anxiety levels.

Meditation helps to increase your energy. If you feel tired and sluggish in the morning, a short meditation practice can help boost your energy level. Even just a few minutes a couple times a day can help you increase energy. Techniques such as focusing on the breathe and deep breathing increase oxygenation and enhance the flow of energy in the body.

In addition to physical benefits, mediation offers mental and emotional benefits. Focus, concentration and clarity are improved with a regular meditation practice. Research conducted at Harvard showed that meditation actually produces changes in areas of the brain that are responsible for sensory processing and attention. Other studies have shown that creativity may be enhanced, as well.

The effects of meditation for reducing anxiety and stress are well known and there is a substantial body of research to demonstrate these benefits. Meditation can help reduce stress and anger in kids and teens, as well as adults. The calming benefits aren’t limited to the time spent in meditation. You will feel more relaxed and calm throughout the day.

When you are ready for bed, you will sleep better at night, if you practice regularly. Many people meditate before bed to relax the body and mind before going to sleep. If you have problems falling asleep, even a few minutes in meditation before going to bed may help quiet your mind.
