If you’re struggling with loneliness what can you do about it? Here are 5 tips for combating loneliness.
Join a church if you don’t already belong to one. If you do and you’re not making good friends there, then maybe you ought to start looking for another spiritual home where people are actively trying to live out the Christian life and that means connecting with others and putting ourselves out for others.
Don’t just go along to church on Sundays but become involved – join a bible study group? There you will get to know people in a more relaxed and informal ways, where you can learn from and discuss God’s Word and pray for each other. If you’ve never been involved in a bible study group before can I suggest that more often than not, this is one of the best things for deepening your Christian faith and helping you make real, strong friends.
Join a craft or special interest group. When I first moved to this new area two of the first groups I joined were a church and a choir. What a great blessing both have been. It’s also good to get together with people who have a shared interest. The next thing I joined once my arm came out of plaster was a tennis club. It not only gives me exercise but is a lot of fun. We have a friendly group who take their tennis seriously but are always ready to have a laugh and some fun and encourage others. I have greatly missed all these activities since I have been sick.
Invite your neighbor or workmate over for a meal or afternoon tea. Shyness is something that affects a lot of people. Sometimes people would love to make friends but are too shy to put themselves forward and reach out to others. Put your own feelings aside and try reaching out. You might just be surprised to find someone else who wants a friend as much as you do.
Volunteer – a lady in our choir has recently moved here. One of the first things she did was volunteer in goodwill shops, charities and community centers where she knew she would not only be helping people but getting to know others in the neighborhood.
