Although Thanksgiving is behind us, it doesn’t mean the temptation to overeat is gone. This is especially true if you are a baker or live with someone who is, or work at a place where treats are always being brought in.
From Thanksgiving until after the New Year, it is easy to put on weight (some say it’s an average of 10 pounds). Because more than likely, the enthusiasm to exercise has also worn off.
So between all the food and the lack of motivation or time to exercise (now we are busy shopping, attending parties, baking, writing Christmas cards, etc.), we may be fighting an uphill battle. But you can do something about it. Here are five tips on how to avoid extra weight gain during the holidays.
First, although you may be busy with shopping and other activities, you can squeeze in time for exercise. Take an extra lap around the mall. Park your car far away from the store, so you get in some walking. Don’t take the escalators, take the stairs.
Second, become a sampler. Just because treats are available doesn’t mean you have to dive right in. Take smaller pieces. If you have a variety to choose from, select just one. Even though you are enjoying the way something tastes, it doesn’t mean you have to keep going.
Third, eat smaller meals throughout the day. Starving yourself until the “big meal” is the worse thing you can do. Then you are more likely to overindulge. If you eat smaller, healthier meals leading up to it, then you will eat less.
Fourth, drink lots of water. This can help you feel fuller faster.
Fifth, even if you do like to bake you don’t have to make dozens and dozens of cookies and other treats. Keep it simple and replace recipes that call for butter or vegetable oil with applesauce. It is healthier and makes the treat moister.
