It’s Father’s Day, so many of us will be doing fun stuff with our spouses. My daughter is going to take my husband out to see Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties because the two of them love Garfield and she’s saved up the money to take him to the movies. This afternoon, however, when she is napping, we’re going to pop in the movie 50 First Dates (his idea, believe it or not!).
So why is 50 First Dates a great movie for a Sunday afternoon? First of all, do an Adam Sandler double feature of The Longest Yard and 50 First Dates. Both movies are delightful in their different ways and offer more than just entertainment – they offer good conversation!
What is 50 First DatesAbout?
The movie features Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler in a unique, off beat romantic comedy that actually transcends the genre. How you ask? Simple, Adam Sandler plays Henry Roth, an aquatic veterinarian who enjoys dating tourists because he can have a good time without worry for attachment. He is working on rebuilding a boat and refurbishing it so that he can go to Alaska and study walruses.
Then he meets Lucy, played by Drew Barrymore, a delightful woman that intrigues him and to whom he is immensely attracted. When he can’t get her out of his head and he goes back to visit her once more, she doesn’t recognize him and it turns out that Lucy was in an accident a year before. She can no longer retain her short-term memory – every day is a repeat of the day she had her accident.
What makes the movie so attractive is the love story as Henry goes to great lengths to win Lucy over and have her fall in love with him day after day.
Poignant and Loving
Lucy’s father and brother, characters in their own right, demonstrate their great love and affection for Lucy as they care for her and recreate her world for her each and every day. If you don’t have a lot to do this afternoon, take the time to watch 50 First Dates and throw in The Longest Yard – there are great chances that you and your husband will enjoy one or both together as a quiet Father’s Day afternoon before the barbecue, the dinner or whatever other way you plan to celebrate.
