In yesterday’s post, I shared two of the major reasons why shopping on Black Friday isn’t very frugal for me. If you missed that post, you can click here: 7 Frugal Reasons I Won’t Be Going Shopping on Black Friday
Now. I’ll share some more reasons that the Black Friday craze could actually cost me money not save me money.
3. The danger of overbuying things on Black Friday is high. We can all get caught up on snagging the deals and “winning” the bargains before everyone else gets a chance. But saving $100 off of a high-end-computer is still spending a few thousand dollars. And although we didn’t think we needed a set of kitchen knives, there they are at a price that we just can’t pass up! Even with lists, it is hard to avoid all all of that high energy hype and adding on an extra thing or two (or five or ten).
4. Sending the wrong messages to my kids is a big one for not shopping on Black Friday. While I try to instill in them the value of being good stewards of our resources, choosing to rush out and spend, spend, spend instead of spending time with them doesn’t go along with what we would like to teach. Getting caught up in the importance of buying stuff puts too much emphasis on having the latest and greatest material things, which will come back to haunt us later.
5. The likelihood that we would spend money eating out during Black Friday shopping is pretty high. Rising for store openings at 4 a.m (ack) requires some coffee or breakfast, probably lunch somewhere in the day. And after all of that shopping, do you think anyone will have the energy to cook dinner? That is not likely in our house. So although we may have saved some money on the deals, we also spent extra money on food.
