7 Ways to Make a Difference This Christmas

Christmas is almost upon us and, sadly, too many people see it just as a holiday and time of work rather than the celebration that it is. Those of us who know the significance and importance of this event need to be active and creative at this time of year. But what can I do you might be wondering. Let me give you some suggestions.

1. At this time of year many people who don’t normally come along to church will turn up at church or at carols. Pray for the message as it goes out whether through the spoken word, drama or in song. Pray for those who are preaching that they will be faithful to God’s Word. Pray for those listening – that the Holy Spirit will be at work and make those words come alive to them.

2. Invite your friends and workmates and family along to church or to carols events. Be prepared to talk with them further if they show interest in what they hear.

3. Don’t pressure them to make a decision for Jesus there and then, but have copies of ‘two ways to live’ or some similar leaflet on hand if the person shows interest in what they have heard.

4. Be welcoming and friendly to any visitors you see at your church. Take time to get to know them rather than just talk to those you know and feel comfortable with.

5. To non Christian family and friends, include a newsletter with your Christmas card that testifies to God’s goodness and provision for you during the year.

6. Get together a group and go out caroling or sing at local nursing homes. Or bake some cookies and take them to nursing homes along with a leaflet telling them what Christmas is all about or focusing on one of the traditions behind Christmas and its meaning.

Last Sunday in our church everyone was handed a red or green scroll and a candy cane. The scroll gave the story of how the candy cane came into being. I’ve been in church for years and this was the first time I’d heard the story of the origin of the candy cane.

7. Help out in any way around your church, cleaning, mowing lawns etc.
