70s Music – Disco

This summer, VH1 will have its second installment of the “I Love the 70s” show. This new series is called “I Love the 70s – Volume 2” and I will be there to watch ever minute of it! I was born in 1963, so I was between the ages of 7 and 17 during the 70s. I often consider myself a child of the 80s, but I do love everything about the 70s, especially the music. If you checked my iPod, you would find more music from the 70s than any other decade.

One of my favorite genres of the decade was disco. Last night, the movie 54 was showing on Encore and I watched a bit of it because, I am not ashamed to say it, I love disco music. I know some people still hate disco to this day, but there are those of us that love it. After years of backlash over the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack success, people are starting to appreciate the Bee Gees for the great musicians they really are. KC and the Sunshine Band have also enjoyed a resurgence of success lately. Even the one hit wonder songs seem to have survived through the years. Most people are familiar with these one hit wonders from the 70s: “More More More” by Andrea True Connection, “It’s Raining Men” by the Weather Girls, and “I Love the Nightlife” by Alicia Bridges. That is because many disco songs from the 70s have enjoyed a rebirth by being featured on television shows, movies, even commercials.

Maybe I love disco so much because it is such happy music. Looking back now, I think it may have been born as a response to the times. When disco was popular, I was too young to worry about the problems of the day such as gas lines, Watergate, or rising unemployment. Then disco exploded onto the culture and by the time it had reached the point of our local news doing a weekly broadcast teaching the latest disco dance steps, the backlash began. People gathered to celebrate burning piles of disco albums. You began hearing that disco was dead. But, it wasn’t really dead, just lying dormant, until people were ready to appreciate it for what it was again. If you still love disco, you can find great buys on CDs at Amazon.com!

Do you have a favorite song from the disco era?
