Fourth of July Flag Projects

Celebrate our nation’s independence with these fun, flag projects.

American Flag

While kids will have a great time making these crafts, they can be messy, so they are best done outdoors if possible. If working inside, be sure to thoroughly cover work surfaces.

Handmade Flag

Your kids will have a blast making this flag and will be proud to display their version of Old Glory.

Items Needed:

  • Poster board or stiff white fabric
  • Red, white, and blue craft paints
  • Paper plates
  • Pencil
  • Gold garland (optional)
  • Glue

Directions:

Cut the fabric or poster board into a large rectangle. Lightly sketch stripes and the field of blue onto the surface with a pencil. Lay out paper plates and pour each color of craft paint onto a separate plate. Spread the paint around the plate. Have children dip their hands in the paint, then tap hands on a clean paint to remove excess. Children will then use their handprints to fill in the red stripes and the field of blue. Once the blue paint dries, children can use white handprints for stars. Glue gold garland around the edges if desired.

Variation:

You can also make this flag decoration on thin, smooth plywood or a large piece of craft wood so you can display it each year.

Dimensional Flag

You will need lots of ping pong balls for this project and some red and blue craft paint. Balls can be old or new because most will be painted. Design a flag on a rectangular piece of craft foam. Paint ping pong balls red and blue and leave some white. When dry, glue them to the foam to fill in the stars and stripes.

Variations:

Instead of ping pong balls, you can make a smaller version with painted wagon wheel macaroni, painted pebbles, or packaging materials like foam “peanuts.”
