Relax – You’re Healthier than You Think

There are a lot of things we do in our daily lives that are healthier than we think they are. In fact, remember when we talked about the fact that chocolate was better for you than we’d previously thought? Well the next little list should make your day – it definitely made mine.

Here are three ways that you make your life healthier.

Coffee Drinkers Rejoice

Does the cashier at Starbuck’s greet you by name? (They do me!) If you drink three eight-ounce cups of coffee every day, you are slashing your risk for Alzheimer and Parkinson’s diseases by 20 and 40 percent respectively. There are numerous published studies out there to support this information and while we’re all feeling a little bit guilty for those Starbuck’s trips – you can take a little relief in the idea that you are helping your health.

Like Comedy Movies?

Like to rent the same comedy over and over again? Prefer going to see the comedy to the dramas? Would you rather skip that action film in favor of the latest Vince Vaughn or Adam Sandler outing? Go for it. Laughter is as healthy for a person as daily exercise. In fact, there were studies published in the British Medical Journal that found watching a funny movie resulted in viewers’ blood vessels expanding more effectively as opposed to the constriction they experienced when watching a stressful film.

Laughter releases endorphins that counteract stress. So laughter, really can be one of the best medicines. In fact, some experts recommend that when you are having a really stressful time of it at the office or with the kids – take a few minutes to close your eyes and visualize yourself at home watching your favorite comedy. The memory can conjure up a level of amusement and release some endorphins that may help curb the stressful event.

You Like Your Lunch Hour

Too many people try to skip their lunch hour and satisfy their need to eat with a meal in front of the computer in the office. Those who work from home may be even worse about eating their lunch on the go or in front of their work. You are better off taking that 20 to 30 minute break and getting away from work – that’s why they call it a break.

If you take your lunch break while you are working — you’re just getting lunch and not a lunch break. If you still want to eat while you work, take 20 minutes to go for a walk at lunchtime and enjoy the day. It’s better for you all the way around and you get some relief from the stress of the day.

Can you name some other healthy fitness habits that you might feel guilty about?
