Apple Crisp

Apples—green, red, a mixture of both. Anyway you slice it, they’re delicious. Some are sweet while others are tart. Some work wonderfully for baking while others taste best when bitten into. I love green apples for eating. They’re tart and delicious. That’s not to say a sweet red Gala apple doesn’t wind up in my kitchen as well though. They’re sweet and crisp, and on a hot day, they’re the perfect treat. I use Macintosh apples to make apple butter because they break down well, and Granny Smith apples are perfect for pies. Try combining them with some Gala apples and the taste is out of this world.

Here’s a recipe for an apple crisp that’ll melt in your mouth:

For this recipe you’ll need:

Six Granny Smith apples

1 teaspoon cinnamon

½ teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon nutmeg

1 TB sugar

1 TB lemon juice

For the topping:

1 Cup packed brown sugar

½ Cup flour

½ Cup oatmeal

4 TB butter

To Make:

Prepare the apples by peeling, coring, and slicing them. Squeeze lemon juice over them so they won’t brown and set aside.

Sift together the salt, nutmeg, sugar, and cinnamon, and combine with the apples. Pour into dish.

Combine brown sugar, flour, and oatmeal and mix with hands. Cut the butter into small pieces (keep it cold) and combine it with oatmeal mixture, mixing with hands until the butter is about the size of peas. Top the apple mixture.

Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 30 minutes.

Tips:

This recipe is great with plums, peaches, etc. as well. Be creative!

You can add cranberries to this recipe as well.

Top with vanilla ice cream for a taste that’s undeniably good.
