Balancing the Holidays: Simplify, Blend and Schedule

Holidays

I don’t know about you, but December tends to be the busiest month of the year.  There is so much to do, so many preparations to make, gifts to buy and a house to clean.

Yet this is also the time of year for being with family.  So how can you balance it all?  I think it comes down to three things:  simplifying, blending and scheduling.

Let me explain.  First, simplify.  What are some things you can skip doing?  Are there areas of the home that really don’t need to be cleaned?

Could you cut down on the amount of baking you plan on doing?  Or spend less money?  Do you really have to decorate every single room of your house?

These are just questions to get you thinking.  In fact, what you might want to do is write down all of the things you have planned for the month of December.  Then work on shortening it.  You might decide that instead of having 50 things to do, you are going to somehow cut it down to 25.

Simplify, simplify.

Second, blend.  What I mean is to blend some of the things that you are going to do with the people you love.  Have your family join you in a day of baking.  Wrap presents together.  Give each person in the family a room to clean.

While you do these things, turn on some Christmas music.  It will help you get into the spirit.

Finally, schedule at least one day every week of December to be with family.  Make it a movie night with some of the old classics like “Christmas Story” or something fun like “Elf.”  Include some hot chocolate and buttered popcorn.

Play board games.  Put on some music and dance away.  Take a drive and look at Christmas lights.  Or just spend time talking.

It may be a busy time of year but you can combat it by simplifying, blending and scheduling.  Happy holidays!
