Nebraska Genealogy Resources

Nebraska the Good LifeNebraska is “The Cornhusker State”. Are you searching for more information about your ancestors who once lived in Nebraska? Here are some helpful Nebraska genealogy resources that you can use. Most of them are accessible for free.

Cyndi’s List is, quite possibly, the largest collection of online genealogy links. If it is on the internet, Cyndi’s List probably has a link to it. They have a page called “United States – Nebraska”. Start by choosing from any of their categories. Some of them include: “Birth, Marriage, Death”, “Census”, “Counties”, “Military”, “Newspapers”, and more.

Ancestry.com has a page that is filled with links to all of their collections of Nebraska genealogy records. To access these records, you must have an Ancestry.com membership. Sometimes, there will be records offered for free access. Return to their page often. Ancestry.com does a great job of making it clear when a collection is new, has been updated, or is being offered for free.

FamilySearch has a Wiki page about the state of Nebraska. It has links to each of the counties in the state. You can also find links to many of the major repositories of Nebraska records. There also are two links that will bring you to other FamilySearch Wiki pages about record collections that pertain to Nebraska.

Nebraska State Genealogical Society has a search engine at the top of their page. Put your ancestor’s first and last name into it. Choose the record type you want to search through: vital, birth, death, marriage, divorce, or “Genealogy”. GeneaLinks also has helpful information for genealogists who are new to Nebraska genealogy. Did you know that all vital records in the state are kept confidential for 50 years?

Nebraska State Genealogical Society has the NESGS Book Library housed at the Beatrice Public Library in Beatrice, Nebraska. Their website hasn’t been updated very recently. They also have a Facebook page. It is a good resource to use if you want to connect with other genealogists who are working on Nebraska genealogy.

Internment.net has cemetery records online. Start by putting your ancestor’s name into the search engine at the top of the page. Or, you can start by checking out the list of links to individual counties in Nebraska. If there is a link, it means that there is information from cemeteries that are located in that county. Not all the counties have links.
